Can I reset my own circuit breaker?

Yes. Tripping a breaker is a fairly common electrical occurrence that most homeowners face. To reset your circuit breaker, simply look at your breaker box to identify any of the switches that are out of place. All you need to do is flip the switch back to its normal position, and you should be good to go!

Why do my light bulbs burn out so frequently?

Lightbulbs tend to burn out quickly if they are not the proper wattage for the fixture or appliance. Make sure you only use lightbulbs that are the correct power that’s intended for each specific use.

What is a “tamper-resistant receptacle”?

Tamper-resistant receptacles feature “doors” that slide in front of the openings to prevent children from inserting items into the holes and experiencing electrical shock. These outlets are typically found in homes built after 2008 and are recommended for renovation projects as well.

Do I need a special type of outlet for my outdoor space?

Yes. Any outlet that can be exposed to the elements must adhere to certain standards and are manufactured with certain weather-resistant features in place.

How can I tell if an electrical outlet isn’t safe?

Electrical plugs should fit snugly into the receptacle. If you find that your plugs are loose or fall out of outlets, that’s a big indication that it needs to be replaced. Additionally, if you notice that an outlet feels hot or warm, you should call an electrician immediately to address the issue.

What is GFCI and where do I need them?

GFCI outlets feature test and reset buttons. These special outlets are designed to shut off in the event of a circuit overload to protect users from electrocution. They should be installed anywhere that poses a risk of electricity meeting water—this includes within six feet of any sink (kitchen or bathroom).
